Most mens fragrances manufactured nowadays smell rusty, like the inside of a car door which has been left in a field for a decade. They have distasteful hints of what smells not unlike battery acid for their top notes, obscure and mellow middle notes, very much like the smell of a spent teabag, and basenotes which give off that familiar whiff of common wet soil.

However, Annick Goutal have proved something quite interesting with their masculine perfume "Duel", which follows the line of something musky, like the past, but is (unlike most) attractive, beautiful, and truly and top-wuality perfume.

I think this is truly wonderful. Duel is a truly classic fragrance, it is what one imagines the past would smell like. Upon smelling it, one comes into contact with the true past: old wooden boxes - noble and brave men - unlike the musky dribble of meaningless scents which stagger out of your average aftershave. Duel is also really quite attractive: I know this because somebody asks me "what perfume are you wearing?" on average twice a day. With my lifestyle, that is a lot. More that you get with most perfumes without a single little doubt.

It is not just myself that I know likes Annick Goutal - my lovely mum has also become rather partial to "Eau d'Hadrien" : Annick Goutal's original fragrance. It smells just great on her: with hints of beautiful citrus and is as elegant a perfume as any available on today's perfume market. It is a key characteristic of all Goutal perfumes: a subtle mixture of elegance, class, and a skill continued from the past.
